BOOK FAIR

"PAWS FOR BOOKS: Come. Stay. Read a Great Tale!" is the theme for the Scholastic Book Fair currently being held in the library until Friday, May 4th. It is open from 8:00-3:30 except for the afternoons of Friday, April 27 when it will close at 11:30 and Friday, May 4th when it will close at 2 p.m. for pack-up. The book fair will also be open on Thursday, April 26 from 7-8:30 p.m. during Open House. PARENTS: We are featuring the Classroom Wish List program and also have gift certificates available for teachers and students. LUNCH TICKETS

As of Wednesday, May 9^thwe will have eleven (11) lunch days left. A (10) punch ticket is $37.50 for K-4^thand $40.00 for 5^th-8^th. A (5) punch ticket is $18.75 for K-4 and $20.00 for 5^th-8^th. Please keep this in mind when buying lunch tickets, as the tickets do not carry over to the next school year. 

END OF YEAR MEDICINE PICK UP 

If your child has any type of medicine (inhaler, epi pen, cough medicine, ibuprofen, etc) in the school office it needs to be picked up before the last day of school. 

The only medication that is kept will be for the students attending summer school. All others will be disposed of.

CONGRATULATIONS NATIONAL WRITING CONTEST WINNER ANNA JORDAN

Hearty congratulations are due to 7th grader Anna Jordan for being one of only five winners of the nationwide Harriet Tubman writing contest sponsored by Scholastic. Anna wrote an inspiring and award-winning essay answering the question: "What is Harriet Tubman’s legacy?" Not only does Anna have the honor of being named one of the winners of the contest, she also received a copy of the novel Unboundby Ann E. Burg. Good job, Anna!

We are preparing for the 2018-2019 school year and currently seeking volunteers for the following positions:

• Silent Auction Committee: Graphic Designer (makes posters for teacher items)
• Silent Auction Committee: Donation Chair (applies for donations and coordinates donations)
• Used Uniform Sales Chairperson Trainee: organizes 4-6 used uniform sales throughout the school year
• Fun & Fitness Chairperson Trainee: shadow current Fun & Fitness Chair and leads this event in 2019-2020
• Bulletin Board Chairperson: creates decorative bulletin boards 4-6 times per school year

CYBERPATRIOT COMPETION NEWS 

This past Saturday, April 28, 2 teams from SML CyberPatriot program attended Cyber Cup competition at 

Estaban Torres High School, hosted by LAUSD.  Both teams placed in the middle school division.

Penny Wars are a fun way to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in their research for cures of childhood cancers.  We compete each grade against the others.  Pennies are positive points, bring many pennies to build points for your grade.  All other coins and paper money are negative points, bring lots of other money to sabotage the other classes and make their points go down.  The grade with the most points at the end will win ice cream bars. Penny War money can be brought to Ms. Abbott's class, room 38, each day of Spirit Week during lunch.  All money will go to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

CANDY NEEDED

Students may also earn points during Spirit Week by bringing in individually wrapped candy (NO BLOW POPS 

or BUBLE GUM) to their classroom.  The candy will be used on Friday in the "candy room”.

GREAT JOB, ERIC!!

Our seventh grader, Eric Ye, participated in a regional spelling bee on Sunday, March 4th in North Hollywood. He was one of the 150 local school winners out of the 34,109 Los Angeles County students who participated in this program during this academic year 2017 - 2018. Although he did not place for the final bee, Eric did a wonderful job at representing our school.  It was a tremendously exciting event.

CUB SCOUTS OPEN HOUSE

Cub Scouts (grades 1-5) will be having it annual Blue and Gold banquet on Sunday, 3/18 at 4:00 pm at St. Mark's Fellowship Hall. All families are welcome to attend this banquet and open house to learn more about scouting. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations, providing programs for young people that build character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, develops personal fitness, and life-long friendship. We are preparing for the next school year and are looking to have more dens/grades meet directly after school and are looking for den parents, assistant den parents, den leaders and assistant leaders. CALIFORNIA MATH LEAGUE - CAML 2018 MATH CONTEST

MATH COUNTS

On Saturday the team competed against 12 other schools in the regional MathCounts Competition in Irwindale and placed 6th out of 12.  Our top finisher was Preston Lee who took 21st out of 108 competitors, just missing out on the top 16 that go to the countdown round.  The other top finishers included Jeff Sun in 33rd, Justin Sullivan-Pascual in 39th, and Kristen Ng in 43rd.  They all had a great attitude and represented us well as always!!

PARENTS OF PRE SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS

If you have a preschool aged child that you would like to have start preschool for our 2018-2019 school year please make sure to enroll ASAP. Our current preschoolers will have until February 28^th to re-enroll. Starting March 1^st we will fill any available spaces with new students. The last couple of years we have been full by the end of the prior school year. Please don’t wait, we would feel bad if we didn’t have room for one of our siblings.  When we open, siblings will have top priority before the public.

ST. MARK'S TEACHERS' TEA

 It’s going to be a "Mardi Gras” celebration this year for our annual teacher appreciation luncheon to thank our teachers and staff for all their hard work throughout the year.  This year's event will take place on MONDAY, MARCH 5th, 2018  from 11:30 am – 1:00pm.  We need help from our St. Mark's families to make this event a success.   We are seeking volunteers to help set-up, bring a food item, watch our kids on the playground and clean-up, among other things.  Details are provided in the Teacher Tea Letter in your Tuesday envelopes.  Please email smlteacherstea@gmail.com if you have questions or would like to bring a food item or volunteer and earn some family commitment hours!

CYBER PATRIOT NEWS

Our 6 Cyber Patriot teams competed the weekend of January 20th against 642 other teams nationally. We were required to compete on the same test the high school students were taking! Four of our 6 teams are moving on to the semifinals! That’s wonderful! Also, our girls team (all 8th graders) ranked 24th in the nation! Very impressive! And one of our boys team (four 8th graders and one 7th grader) ranked 30th! Also very impressive! There were 142 middle schools which competed and 19 of the top 30 teams nationally are from middle schools! Way to go! Wish us well on the semifinals which are on Saturday, February 10!

AMC 8 Math Competition Results

SML 8^th graders, Preston Lee and Kristen made the AMC (American Mathematics Competitions) 8 Math Honor Roll nationally for scoring in the top 5%.  Over 44,000 8^th graders participated nationwide in AMC 8 competition in November 2017.   At SML, 22 8^th graders participated.  Preston Lee placed in the first place, Kristen Ng in the second place, and Ethan Hu, Jacky Ke, Mai Omoto tied in the third place.

There is a current fad in gentlemen¹s hairstyles in which the sides are cut very short and the top left long. This type of hairstyle is not permitted. According to SML dress code, the length of the hair must be blended from sides to top.  Please refer to the handbook p. 21 for more details regarding hairstyles.

Our school tours for the 2018-2019 school year have begun.  If you have any friends interested in SML please have them contact the school office to set up a tour appointment.

The Day Care rate will be $20 for students remaining at school on a minimum day schedule regardless of the time that the student is picked up. This rate is charged only for those students who are not on the monthly, prepaid Day Care rate. There is a "15 minute” grace period before your child will be checked into daycare all days and on either of the early dismissal times of 11:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m.

Christmas Break day care rates for individual daily use is $40 per day per child.

SCRIP

SCRIP office is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, November 28^th and 29^th.  SCRIP orders maybe dropped off in the school office.

If your child brings a medical note from either parent or physician restricting them from P.E. or sports it is very important that they bring it to the office first thing in the morning.  It is important for the office to know if there are health issues at the beginning of the school day.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

Host families are needed to host students from South Korea in January 2018 and February 2018. 

The host families will be compensate for the length of student's stay

2017 SML Robotics Team finished the season placing second in Robot Design and third in Robot Performance at this past Saturday tournament.

The team also received high remarks on their project and Core Value aspects of the FLL (First Lego League) program.  Our dedicated team members include: Rachel Bai, Ryan Iglesias, Jason Lim, Kamran Lim-Hanna, Claire Lu, Isaiah Pro, Luke Rodriguez, Matthew Shao, Justin Sulivan-Pascual, Mackenzie Yang.  We also would like to give a big THANK YOU to our equally dedicated and supportive parents!

8^TH GRADE HIGH SCHOOL RECOMMENDATIONS

High School recommendation forms are available in the school office. There is a $5.00 processing fee that is due with the completed form and any forms the high school needs. Please allow 2 weeks for this process, our teachers need time to write their recommendations and we need to get them in the mail to the high schools in a timely manner. 

MEDICAL NOTES

If your child brings a medical note from either parent or physician restricting them from P.E. or sports it is very important that they bring it to the office first thing in the morning.  It is important for the office to know if there are health issues at the beginning of the school day.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

Host families are needed to host students from South Korea in January 2018 and February 2018. 

The host families will be compensate for the length of student's stay

3 weeks program: Jan 6, 2018 ~ Jan 27 2018 - 7 weeks program: Jan 6th 2018~ Feb 24. 2018

Students are from 3rd grade to 8th graders

FUN & FITNESS

Check out the bulletin board with class updates for fundraising – Looking good Lions! Let’s keep building on our momentum. We will need water donated for the event on November 17^th which can be dropped off in the Fellowship Hall. Just write F&F on the case of water. The smaller bottles are preferred. If you would like to volunteer to help at the event, just head to the lower field after drop off on the 17^th and there will be sign-up sheet. FOOD DRIVE

Thank you to all our students for helping to fill the shelves of the Food Bank.  A big thank you to our student council for loading all three (3) trucks. Thank you to Charlie Munoz and Julian Natera for unloading the groceries at the food bank.  A special thank you to our parents who drove to the food bank, Ruth Flamenco, Joe Zonni and Leticia Avalos. 

CARNIVAL

DAY CARE

Next week Monday and Tuesday we will have a 12:00 noon dismissal for all students.  If your child is not a monthly day care user and they will need to stay in the afternoon there will be a $20.00 per student charge. 

Day Care will begin at 12:00 noon and end at 6:00 p.m.

SCRIP

Final date to order SCRIP will be Monday, December 4^th. Last day for selling SCRIP on hand will be December 15^th in the a.m.

BIRTHDAY INVITATION POLICY

In the SML Handbook on page 32 under Parties in Classrooms, it is stated that invitations may not be passed out at school for personal parties before, during or after school hours on campus. Parents may request a list of class addresses in the office to facilitate mailing personal invitations.

SPORTS UPDATE

St. Mark’s claimed seven of the top eight places in the 6^th-8^th grade division of the league cross country meet, and four of the top six places in the 3rd-5th grade race. Medalists included:

5^th Grade: Diego Banegas 1^st, Dominic Gallardo 2^nd, David Mendoza 3^rd.  6^th Grade: Liam Quesada 2^nd, Noah Campa 3^rd; 7^th Grade: David Rezko 1^st, Charlie Munoz 2^nd, Samuel Ruezga 3^rd; 8^th Grade:  Christopher Chavez 2^nd, Lukas Garcia 3^rd.
